3 of the Best Ayurvedic Herbs/Spices With Health Benefits.

I wanted to start this post by talking about ayurveda and what it is. Ayurveda is an Indian form of medicine aimed to take care of your overall health and wellness, including the mind, body, and soul. I'm of Indian heritage and love eating Indian dishes with some of these incredibly healthy herbs and spices that I'll be sharing to help protect the body from any diseases.

Turmeric

I'm sure that you've heard of turmeric before or have tried it in a dish. Turmeric is a very popular ayurvedic remedy and has a yellow color, which gives a variety of dishes a yellow or orange pigment. I eat this spice all the time in Indian foods, and in fact, most Indian foods contain this spice. For example, daal (lentils), subzi (vegetables), kadhi (yogurt and chickpeas flour), and turmeric rice. First, turmeric is a very powerful antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory properties to help fight inflammation in the body. Turmeric has also been proven to prevent heart disease, partially because it increases blood flow. Additionally, turmeric may improve brain function and fight against degenerative processes in the brain. Turmeric is also really good for your skin and will bring about that natural glow that we all want!

Cumin

Cumin is another spice that's used a lot in Indian dishes. Cumin seeds contain a lot of antioxidants and also many anti-inflammatory properties as well. Cumin helps with bowel movements and the release of waste from the body, and also helps with digestion in general. This spice also contains anti-microbial properties to help prevent food-borne illnesses. Also, cumin helps lower the blood sugar in our bodies and reduces bad cholesterol and triglycerides.

Coriander

Coriander is an herb used to add flavor to Indian dishes. This herb has many immune-boosting antioxidants, and like turmeric, can help protect brain health. Corriander is also good for promoting good digestion and gut health, to help with any bowel problems, such as IBS. Corriander also helps lower blood sugar and remove sugar from the blood by increasing the activity of a certain enzyme used to perform this. It's also super easy to add to your diet. I eat it in lentils and vegetables!

I hope you find a way to incorporate these healthy herbs & spices into your favorite meals!

Take care of yourself,

Esha
